About Me
To be honest, I’m not a bookworm. I enjoy reading, but not once when I was growing up did I think I would write a book. In fact, I specifically remember a time in high school when I absolutely despised novels. We were reading Huckleberry Finn at the time, and like all English classes, the teacher was making us analyze things like the motivation of the characters. I remember thinking what a worthless exercise that was. Here we were debating the thoughts and feelings of a made up character who didn’t exist beyond the words written on the page. All we knew is what Twain told us, and discussing the characters as if they were real people seemed like such a waste of time.
Fast forward ten years and I can tell you, I still don’t like analyzing the themes and imagery of a book, but I have found a love for telling a story. I’d like to think I was partially right back in high school. All a reader knows about the characters is what the author tells them, and if the author does it well, those characters will come across as if they are real. Give those characters interesting motivation, put them into unique situations, and you’ve got yourself a story.
Before getting into this whole writing thing though, I became a middle school math teacher. It’s a fun job that never gets boring, and one of the best perks is that it allows you to pursue other things you love. I’m not sure I could have found the time to write if I had been working in a different profession. While I’ve fantasized about becoming a full-time writer, I also realize it’s a tough career to make money at. Teaching allows me to support my family, and writing can just be fun.
I don’t know where things will go from here, but I had a great time working on my first novel, and I’m looking forward to the second.
